Dance
Examination Board: AQA
Course Code: 7237
Entry Requirements: Grade 6 in Dance at GCSE
Why study Dance?
A Level dance develops a wide range of skills that are ideal to transfer to the workplace or into further education. For example, dance students can communicate effectively both verbally and in written format, tackle challenges from any given starting point, work well with others and build relationships based on trust.
Dance A Level is a performance-based subject but is equally weighted with a theoretical aspect which provides an appropriate focus for students to critically engage with dance and understand the interrelationship between the creation, presentation and appreciation of dance.
What will I study?
You will study the history of the Rambert Dance Company from 1966 and Modern Dance in Britain from the year 2000 to the present day. You will study two set works: Rooster and Sutra. Practically, you will learn the movement styles of practitioners within these time frames alongside performance, technical and choreographic skills in the contemporary style.
How will I study?
You will have an equal mixture of both practical and theory lessons where you will be given the opportunity to explore, experiment and excel in all the areas you will have examinations for at the end of the course. You will have opportunities to perform regularly to build on the skills needed to be successful.
How will my work be assessed?
Component 1: Performance and Choreography (practical exam with a visiting examiner)
- Solo performance linked to a specified practitioner within an area of study. The practitioners you will study will be Richard Alston and Christopher Bruce. You will encapsulate the stylistic features of the chosen practitioner for a solo performance.
- Performance in a quartet.
- Group choreography. You will receive an exam paper in the September of Year 13 where you will have four set choreography questions to choose from, and implement all the choreographic skills you have learnt throughout the course to answer your chosen question to create a coherent piece.
Component 2: Critical engagement (written exam):
- Section A: short answer questions on the set work: Rooster.
- Section B: essay question based on the Rambert Dance Company 1966-2002.
- Section C: essay question based on Modern Dance in Britain 2002-present day.
- Section D: essay question based on the set work: Sutra.
