Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Level 3 Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Exam Board: AQA
Course Code: 7993
Entry Requirements: Level 7 in GCSE English Language or Literature
What is an EPQ and why do one?
The EPQ is an independent research-based project that students carry out in Year 12. It enables you to enhance your qualifications by pursuing an interest of your choice, alongside your other A Level subjects.
The EPQ helps to develop key skills in project management, research and critical thinking which are valued by both employers and universities. Specifically, the EPQ gives you the opportunity to:-
• learn more about an area that interests you or research a subject not available through other qualifications
• develop independent research and project management skills
• learn time management
• learn skills that will help in higher education or the workplace.
What will I study?
You will choose your own topic to research. Although there are no limits to what you study, it must not duplicate anything you are taught at A Level and should allow you to produce academic work of an A Level standard.
The independent research is supported by a programme of taught skills, delivered throughout the course, which includes:
· Organisation and time management
· Research skills
· Critical thinking
· Referencing and citation
· Essay and report writing
· Presentation skills
· Reflection and evaluation
How will I study?
The majority of the course is independent study with some teacher-led lessons throughout the year. The exam board recommend that an EPQ should take around 120 hours.
You will be allocated a supervisor who you will meet with one a 1-1 basis during the year. Your supervisor is able to provide advice and guidance on your project, helping you to evaluate and improve your work.
How will work be assessed?
There are no exams. Instead, you will produce one piece of coursework, accompanied by a formal presentation of your project to teachers and other students.
Your finished project can be presented in one of two ways:
· An academic essay of around 5000 words
· An artefact (in which you design and make a product) with an accompanying written report.
You will be marked on your ability to manage, research, complete and evaluate your project.
