Why study English Language?
English Language is a great course for anyone who is interested in the ways in which language is used in writing and in speech, including how it is used in society by different groups. If you enjoyed the original writing element of GCSE, this course allows you to develop those writing skills further.
What will I study?
English Language is not the same as it is at GCSE! This is a discipline which is focused on the field of linguistics, in which you learn how to explore the nuts and bolts of language in everyday use and how it is used by different groups (for example: social, gender, occupation). You will begin by learning advanced linguistic terminology which you will apply to a range of non -literary texts, including transcripts of speech. Additionally, the course delves into the study of how children acquire language and the different theories associated with learning to speak, read, and write.
How will I study?
Your lessons will include close examination of language in a range of texts, as well as lots of discussion and debate. You will be expected to do lots of reading in your independent study time to prepare for your lessons each week.
How will I be assessed?
80% Examination (40% per paper) and 20% NEA (also known as coursework).
